Chapter Christmas Party

Every year at the Christmas time several of the District and Grand Officers from our District get together to fellowship and relax. Tonight was the night we chose this year and despite a last minute conflict for some with another Masonic meeting, we had a nice turnout at Marion's Pizza by the Dayton Mall.

Merry Christmas

Wishing you a Merry Christmas as we are taking a few days off this week to celebrate Christmas and attend to some family activities. Next week things will start back up hot and heavy so hoping for some good weather and a win next week for THE Ohio State University on New Year's Day.

Royal Arch Chapter School

Today was the 3rd District School of instruction in the Past Master Degree in West Carrollton at Friendship Chapter. While I originally planned to go to the Cincinnati four Chapter Inspection degree day at Loveland, the events of the past week required me to get some other tasks accomplished this afternoon and the School was scheduled only for the morning. We had a good turnout and many good questions while the DDGHPs kept it moving along yet light and infused with some humor during the morning so it didn't get too boring. I'm hoping the rest of the ritual instruction meeting go this well.

Charlemagne RCC

Tonight was the Red Cross of Constantine meeting in Findlay at the Country Club for our annual Christmas Party and Installation of Officers. They had a great dinner and many distinguished guests along with Deputy Harvey Lowry and Past Grand Sovereign Birch Zehner were present. Since I am in line here I was installed along with Richard Herr the new Sovereign and Viceroy John Clime. The outgoing Sovereign Jack Allen was congratulated for a great job this past year. I was especially glad we got done early as it allowed me time to get home and get my 5 miles walking for the day done (on the treadmill) before midnight.

Khana Shahar/Ormus Grotto Joint Installation

Tonight was joint installation for these two Grotto's held in Springfield and Installed by Past Monarch Marty Trent. The new Monarch for Ormus is Keith Newton, Grand Marshal Grand Lodge of Ohio who indicated he "liked the aspect of working with and helping kids and families as a reason for joining and becoming involved". Bruce Seaburn State President for the Ohio Grotto Association was present in addition to Tom Schlipp District Deputy. The new Monarch for Khana Shahar indicate he wanted to work with Ormus to have some joint fun activities during the year.

Sad Update on Pam's Mom

While Pam encouraged me to go to the Inspection I had planned at Oriental Chapter in West Salem, I decided I needed to be with her and I'm glad for the decision which I made. This evening after 86 years, Pam's mom took her last breath and passed on. While it is always a sad time when someone passes, her mom got her last requests honored about how she would go and passed away peacefully at Hospice with Pam and myself present. The folks there were fantastic and they definitely offer a peaceful atmosphere to spend your final days. As her mom's health had deteriorated greatly over the past couple of years (to the point she could no longer leave the house except to go to the doctors) she had finally come to the point where she would have no longer been able to stay in her own home and must have realized it as she always she that she hoped to pass on before leaving her home for some type of adult care facility.

70 Year Plaque Presentation

While there has been little to no change for Pam's mother on her condition, today I took a little time out of our around the clock vigil with her mother to attend a 70 year plaque presentation. The Grand High Priest presented to a Past High Priest (also Past Master) of Mt. Moriah chapter in the 3rd District a 70 year plaque. In talking with him at the time he served he was the youngest in the state serving and the youngest in the Chapter's history. He seemed in good health even despite a recent car accident. It was a nice event at Bethany Village where he is living with the current High Priest of Mt. Moriah chapter also being present in addition to several other Grand Chapter officers.

Shrine Stated Meeting - Almost

Well late last night it became apparent that Pam's mom is not going to recover this time. They, however, send us home as they felt it would be a couple more days but early this morning they called and told us we should come back. Today was the stated meeting and elections at the Shrine so I stopped by the Shrine to hand over some information about the Cabiri Christmas Party I am in charge of tomorrow and then went back over to Hospice. (I also backed off going to the meeting in Lima for the Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests which I had today as well) We stayed the entire day and I just came back home for a while and will probably be going right back. I probably won't be writing anything until this situation is done but hopefully she won't suffer much longer.

Adoniram Council #131 Inspection

Tonight was the inspection for my Council. We had 17 PIM present and around a total of 40 of our members in attendance. I have now moved to close to the front of the PIM line but there were still two present who served before me (I was IM 26 years ago). They were inspected in the SM degree and did a good job. There were to many dignitaries to mention in attendance but one was the Grand Illustrious Master Lynn Alexander. I'm hoping for a good day tomorrow ... so far this week it hasn't been the best news including some complications with work.

Ervin Leonard Viewing

Well last night I was headed to Lima to two Chapter Inspections but got a call from Pam that her mother had taken a turn for the worse so I turned around and headed over to Hospice (she is still hanging on right now). Tonight I had another viewing for a Past Master of Mystic Lodge who was active in the 70's and early 80's but who I got to be better friends with from another fraternal organization. At 86 he was still outside working when he apparently had a heart attack. Not a good week 3 viewing so far this week and one to go Sunday for our Commandery Prelate's Mother.

Lloyd Cole viewing

Today was the viewing for a Past High Priest and Past Master of my Lodge. Lloyd though had something a little different than most he was blind and despite this did all his own floorwork and was a superior ritualist. In addition, he was the Worshipful Master who asked me to start in line back in 1985. Most probably never knew he was blind as he never missed a beat on the floorwork and conducted the candidates as Senior Deacon like he was not blind. He also marched one year with us in Commandery and actually did the sword manual. Unfortunately around 15 years ago he started int he early stages of Alzheimer's and progressed very quickly to the point where he didn't recognize people. He had to move into a nursing home and has lived there since that time. Everyone who ever met him loved him and his quick wit and great humor was something I will never forget....but the one thing that I will always remember was he never missed a funeral. I asked him why he went out of his way and he said "it is the last thing you will ever get to do for that brother and I never want to regret not doing what I could for him". It has always stuck with me and is something I try to do whenever possible myself. So long friend.

Samaritan Chapter #50 Inspection

Tonight I travelled to Coshocton Ohio for the annual Inspection in the Mark Master Degree. The 14th District, which this Chapter is located, is part of my region for this year. Two Past Grand High Priests, who are now both from this District, were present: MEC Alan Hart and MEC John Gartrell. This is not my first time here and if my plans stay true, I will also be here for Lodge, Council and Commandery Inspections during this Inspection season. The room here is uniquely shaped as it is wider than it is long.

Bill Purdy Viewing

Tonight was the viewing and Masonic Services for Past Grand High Priest Bill Purdy. I've know Bill for probably 25 years and earlier this year I found a little red change purse he gave out when he was Grand High Priest. When I mentioned it to him he just said, "if you want more I still have plenty". The trip to Spencerville seemed shorter than normal (or I'm just getting back in the driving groove since Inspection season has started back up). An update on my mother-in-law is that she seemed to have stabilized and is doing better. Unfortunately, I received three more notices yesterday about funerals this week for friends from different groups.....hopefully things will get less hectic soon.

Shrine Jesters Christmas Party

Tonight was the annual Jesters Christmas Party at Antioch Shrine. While I was lucky to make it as I spent the afternoon in the emergency room with Pam who had to take her mother to the hospital today (she was admitted tonight and doesn't seem to be doing real good but at 86 sometimes it is tough to have a good day). The party was a good break from the craziness which has been going on at work, with my mother-in-law and activities going on outside work. We had a great dinner and then told some jokes and departed for home early. It made for a short yet enjoyable break.

Plans Changed

Well originally I was headed north to Tiffin for Chapter Inspection this morning and then to Xenia for their Chapter Inspection finishing up with the Grand Illustrious Master Reception. Around midnight last night they sent a note that we would have a meeting this morning and then several would be working today afterwards. I decided not to go north but head straight to Xenia. I made the right choice as the meeting this morning ran long and I would have driven to Tiffin only to miss the Inspection. I then started out to go to Xenia but as I was turning off to go on SR 35, Pam called and told me she needed me for an emergency with her mother. So I turned around and headed over to help her get her mother from off the floor as she had fallen and by the time we got done there, it was time to head south to Cincinnati to the Grand Illustrious Master Reception. Finally, I made it to an event today. It was a nice reception despite it having to be moved from the original location due to it being closed. Tomorrow is another day and while I have two non Masonic events: a fund raising telethon and memorial service and ending the day with a WSU BBall game ... hopefully it will go off as planned but we will see.

Twin Valley #240 Chapter Inspection

Tonight was a close trip over to Farmersville for inspection in the Mark Master Degree at the home chapter of MEC George Shell. MEC Steve Duncan was also in attendance. This Chapter has many distinguished members including Rec Bob Oldfather PDDGHP, REC Fred Gallo PDDGHP, and EC Mac Polston DEO. EC Earl Gorsuch a 70 year member and Steve Goad Commander-in-Chief Valley Dayton are also members of this Chapter in all they had s great turnout with around 50+ in attendance. It was nice to be back in my District tonight near my home. Oh and especially nice my Chapter come out with a dozen members and again won the traveling alter cloth.

Grand River #104 Chapter Inspection

Since I stayed overnight last night, my first stop today was by the lighthouse my pin is designed for this year. I also determined that I really am used to having every moment of my life pre-planned (luckily by me) since today I was a little bored since I was "waiting around" for the inspection to start. The inspection this evening was at Rock Creek which is the home chapter of the DDGHP Doug Dolan so he had a PDDGHP do the Inspection. We had visitors from the 16th and 19th District and again had a good attendance in addition to good ritual work. It was a long drive back which was made even longer since a headlight went out and I got pulled over twice to "let me know". I actually even stopped and picked up the replacement lights but the installation takes pulling the whole light so I decided to wait until I got home since it was after midnight.

Painesville #46 Chapter Inspection

Wow tonight was definitely better weather than the last time I was in Painesville when we had a blizzard! The inspection was in the Past Master Degree but the little extras (including music) they added to the degree made this a night in which I was really glad I was in attendance. They also had a good attendance for the evening and kept everything moving so we still got done early. I was staying overnight to attend the inspection tomorrow so I was able to get back to the hotel early as well. I did, however, make a stop at the Spudnuts for a donut since it is one of the only places I know which makes donuts with potatoes.

Ormus Grotto Stated Meeting

Tonight was the stated meeting and elections for my Grotto. Keith Newton was elected as the new Monarch (Grand Marshal Grand Lodge) and our outgoing Monarch is Skip Vanderhorst. We also discussed and brought a motion to the floor (and it will be voted on in March) to change the stated meetings from first Tuesday to third Wednesday. while it would open the first Tuesday of the month, outside of Inspection session, to attend my chapter; I am going to remain neutral since I will miss meeting either way. It may, however, be good for more than just myself since it opens the possibility of those at the nearby temple in Fairborn Lodge to join and those in Dayton Commandery (both have stated meetings first Tuesday of the month).

Weekly Travels For December

While often my travels are dictated by my work schedule, I am going to try keep at a running monthly schedule of potential Chapter related visits/events outside our area (with an occasional Lodge, Council or Commandery Inspection as well). If anyone from my area is interested in traveling with me, contact me and we will see what we can do.

Dayton Hi 12 Installation

Today I went to the Installation of my Hi 12 Club in Dayton. While I am not able to attend regularly due to work, I try to make it a point periodically to attend. I always remember that while I was in DeMolay the Hi-12 supported me when it was time to attend Leadership Camp. Joe Fair was again installed as President by Past International President Tom Bevington. Rollin Furnas was recognized for the excellent work he has done with the Walcutt Foundation raising Ohio from 7th in the nation to 2nd in funds raised.

Valley Commandery - Order of Malta

Tonight I headed down to my Commandery to help them out as they were performing the full form Order of Malta this evening. I say full form since most Commanderies only do the obligation or a shortened version of the full form. We had a nice turnout and had several who came down to "help out". The candidate was the Worshipful Master two years ago of my Lodge which meets in the Temple. I'm very excited to have him join as he did a very nice job as Worshipful Master and is always willing to help out and has lots of good ideas. I did the second banner before I had to leave since I have a nightly work meeting this evening.

Wooster Council #13 Inspection

Today started out before 6 AM as I headed up to the Council Inspection for Wooster Council in the 8th Arch. They did something a little different at this Council and were Inspected in both degrees. RIC Ed Herrick GPCW, RIC Richard Amlung DGM, Dave Snyder PGC and RIC Bill Straton were all present in addition to the Arch Inspector. They did a nice job on both degrees and what was somewhat interesting is the candidate is an active member in Commandery who just decided to come back and take the Council Degrees. It was a nice drive up to Wooster and even better on the way back as I listened to Ohio State beat Michigan.

Thanksmas Dinner

Tonight was the annual Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection 14th degree annual Thanksgiving/Christmas (Thanksmas) dinner. The Lodge of Perfection officers, past officers and those who helped in the past in this degree are invited to get together for a dinner each year. Usually it is the weekend of Thanksgiving on Saturday evening. We had a nice turnout tonight at the Yankee Trace Golf Course. I would say we had 50+ in attendance. We had good food, good fellowship and some bad jokes before we all headed back to our homes.

Happy Thanksgiving

Taking a couple days off for Thanksgiving with the family. Also planning to walk in the Miamisburg Turkey Trot to walk off some of the turkey I plan to eat at the Thanksgiving dinner. Then this weekend, some Masonic travels start back up....

Shrine Greeters Meeting

Luckily due to Thanksgiving week, since there are not many other meetings this week, I made it to my Greeters Club meeting. They always have a good percentage turnout of members and tonight was no exception. I think the only ones missing were out of town due to being in other states for the Thanksgiving holiday. We covered lots of different categories and areas of discussion but since the meeting was ran very efficiently, we were done in record time.

Cabiri Meeting

Tonight was the final meeting of the year for the Shrine Cabiri (Past Potentates) and my last meeting as President before our Christmas Party. It was nice that the meeting went smoothly and quick as today is our anniversary and I wanted to head home as soon as possible. Twenty four year today on the 24th....I tried to tell Pam next year it would be twenty five on the 25th but she wouldn't go for it so I guess I'll just have to remember how many years on my own!

Solar Installation

This morning I went to Solar's Installation as Bob Deam was Installed as Worshipful Master. A few other from the Shrine were also present as well as some other Solar members. Grand Senior Warden Doug Kaylor was also in attendance. This going to be the start of a busy day including attending my Lodge Installation this evening. While the day was very busy: shopping for our Anniversary on this Monday, Thanksgiving and Christmas for the family (and some needy family's): my phone died sometime this evening and when I figured out it had died and what time it was; it was already around 8:30 so going to my Lodge's Installation was out of the question. The good thing is we got everything we went out to get today. Tomorrow, however, is another day and we will again be shopping but this time for Thanksgiving food to make baskets for the needy.

Post Colors Germantown Lodge

Tonight was the Lodge Installation for Germantown  and while I had planned to go to Wooster's Chapter Inspection, last night I heard our Commandery only had two to post colors so I told them I would help out. Luckily a couple more showed up and we had a decent showing to post colors. Germantown is also one of the closest Lodges to my home Lodge and we have worked with them for many years. It was however my first opportunity to visit their new Lodge which is shared with the IOOF. Since the building has difficult access the two groups are discussing the possibility of building a new Lodge.

Rabboni Chapter #232 Inspection

Tonight was the Chapter Inspection for Rabboni in my District in Fairborn in the Past Master Degree. MEC PGHP George Shell was present along with REC Bill Jones 6th District Deputy Grand High Priest. Several of the Companions from Xenia came over to help them out with the work which was nice to see this Chapter and Xenia working together. There was a nice turnout overall from the District for the Inspection and the count was up from Monday night .... a trend we are hoping to keep going.

New Lisbon Chapter #92 Inspection

Tonight was the Chapter Inspection for New Lisbon in the 19th District (by Youngstown) in the Mark Master degree. For a smaller Chapter in the middle of no where it was good to see a large number of Past High Priests present. To me this indicates they are not just recycling the same High Priest. Tonight also marked another point in my own personal countdown to visit every Chapter in the state as this was one I had not been to but with this visit I am now down to single digits as I have 9 more left and I will have been to every Chapter in the state at some time (and around a dozen who have closed over the years as well). This is also my region for the year so I was glad to be here despite the poor weather conditions.

Friendship Chapter #245 Inspection

Tonight was the first inspection in the 3rd District for the year...and to start off the season we had 5 inches of snow...hopefully this is not a sign of what is to come this year. And despite the snow, we had 40 in attendance and 2 candidates for the Mark Master Degree. This is the home Chapter of MEC Steve Duncan along with RIC Mike Smith Grand Sentinel Grand Council and MIPGM Bobby Campbell Grand Recorder Grand Council. The degree was a great performance for the beginning of the year. I am also proud to say that Trinity Chapter had 10 present (my home Chapter).

Grand Receptions

Today was the Grand Family Meeting for Grand Chapter and we discussed many items to help improve and move Grand Chapter forward. We started early in the morning and went into the afternoon. Later on in the evening we had the Grand Commandery and Grand Chapter Joint Statewide Reception. It was a good turnout with around the same number of persons that the individual reception usually have for each one. While I'm not sure I personally liked the idea, it probably was something good to try. If you don't try new things you will never know if it was a good idea or something you think might not be the direction you would like to see things head in the future.

S.S. Jewell #89 Council Inspection

Tonight was the Council Inspection for SS Jewel in the 5th Arch in Marysville Ohio. Despite a very small membership they did a nice job and are one of the most active Councils in their Arch. They also have many distinguished members. Also in attendance this evening from Grand Chapter was Past Grand High Priest Garis Pugh. The Grand Council was very well represented since in addition to their Inspector Grover Manning also present was Bill Jones Grand Chaplain, Ed Herrick Grand Principal Conductor of the Work and Grand Illustrious Master Lynn Alexander along with Past Grand Illustrious Master Rusty Eagle. An interesting note was one of their candidates last name was Shaw and they also have a KYCH from their temple with the last name of Shaw. I also had to mention that this is not my first time at this Council but the last time was when I was Illustrious Master in 1988 when Jerry Belt was also Illustrious Master of this Council and tonight he presided again over the Degree.

Scottish Rite Reunion

Today and tomorrow is the Scottish Rite Reunion for the Valley of Dayton (I won't be able to make it tomorrow due to the Grand Family Meeting and Joint Reception). Today I was helping to direct the 12th Degree. Unfortunately we had several cast changes from the original starting point this summer but luckily it all came together today for the final performance. We had several new persons in the performance, all of which did a nice job and hopefully will become new regulars on the ritual performance teams. In addition to having a nice class of 35+, we actually had a good crowd for a Friday afternoon performance. After the performance I stayed around for a while but had to get back home to send out a report for that 4 letter word: WORK. (Everyone tells me how they enjoy retirement so much better .... maybe someday I will get to try that but for now if I want to do what I'm doing....I'll have to keep working.)

DEO & Membership Chairman Installation

Tonight was the Installation in Xenia for the 3rd District Education Officer Bruce Gardner and a new position for the District of Membership Chairman Jim Potts. In addition a couple of officers were installed in their respective stations for Xenia Chapter. We are hoping the new Membership Chairman position will help to create more interest in promoting membership in the 3rd District and promote the usage of the Grand Chapter Membership Manual which when used has already proven successful. In addition, prior to the meeting the District Officers and District Education Officers for the District met to discuss expectations and potential upcoming events.

West Gate Chapter #216 Inspection

Tonight was the chapter inspection for West Gate in the 11th District in Columbus in the Most Excellent Master Degree. While the degree work went off well, the High Priest was worried since one of the persons doing one of the parts did not show up. In addition, it was a part no one else in attendance did. As happens in most cases of crisis, someone picked up the book who was a good reader and read the part (it actually indicates the part can be read). Past grand High Priest Most Excellent Companion Don Lossaso was present as was Right Illustrious Companion Grover Manning Grand Marshall Grand Council, who are both members of this chapter. It was also a little interesting in that Right Excellent Companion Dan Smith was helping out the District Deputy by inspecting the ritual work for the MEM degree.

Trinity Chapter Royal Arch Widows Degree

While we had a short recognition tonight to honor our veterans, tonight was set aside for the Royal Arch Widows Degree. It was very successful with 15 ladies receiving the degree which made enough that those with difficulty walking could sit and watch. We probably had around 50 in attendance overall. We had dinner before and refreshments afterwards and all the ladies stayed around afterwards to talk. The best part was many of the ladies were ones I hadn't seen or met in the past. While this is a fun degree, the guys stuck fairly close to the book and added a couple items which were specific to Trinity Chapter. It was also good that it wasn't just the old timers in attendance but many newer members as well.

EnSaWocCa Rededication

Today was the Chapter 150 year Rededication for EnSaWocCa Chapter in Defiance in the 1st District. For a smaller District, they had a nice turnout on the sidelines and I think all the officers were present. It was a nice ceremony and was obvious that they had promoted it around the District. Often the attendance at these events is slim. Afterwards, we had refreshments and headed home.

Frnak S. Land Day Observance and DeMolay Chevalier Degree

Tonight at Ralph H. McMillan Chapter was one special evening. It started out with a great Chevalier Observance Day Dinner and then went into awards night and installation of 7th District Officers. Wendy Crawford received the Cross of Honor and three DeMolay's received the Chevalier degree. The Executive Officer Martin Woodworth was present along with the new 7th District Governor Randy Clark. They had a very nice crowd as the room was packed and at least 5 Past State Master Councilors were present: Randy Clark, Mark Howard, Tom Norris, Derrick Stargell, Marc Chong (hopefully I didn't miss any). If I had to guess I would say around 50 Chevaliers were present.

Council Inspections

This morning was the Council Inspection for Blanchester Council and Wilmington Council in the Royal and Select Master Degree followed up this afternoon with the Super Excellent Master Degree. MEC Kermit Zimmerman was present along with the MIGM Lynn Alexander and Arch Inspector Mike Smith. They did an excellent job on the work this morning and the new Arch's they built for the SM degree were fantastic. (I wish I had taken a picture they were so nice and definitely worth a trip to Wilmington to see if you are thinking about replacing your arches).

Best Laid Plans

Well I'm still hoping to be able to make many of the events I scheduled earlier this week but work threw a curve and scheduled a short daily mandatory meeting M-F at 8:30 at night at least through the end of the month starting tonight. Hopefully after I sit in a couple I'll find out if I can do the calls by phone and possibly slip out of the planned meetings for a couple minutes to call in for work. While I need to work to do what I want to do and am glad to have a job sometimes I would agree with those who remind me that work is a four letter word!

Scottish Rite 12th Degree Rehearsal

Well originally tonight I was going to the DEO installation in Lodge for Kent Crager. He is the 2nd DEO from our Lodge in the 170+ year existence (I was the first) but our Director in the 12th degree had to be out of town and as the Co-Director I was the fill in. (And Kent couldn't be too upset since he was missing the 12th degree rehearsal in which I had gotten him a part). The rehearsal went well despite some conflicts by people who had parts in the degree unable to attend. This reunion is being named for Nate Pelfrey Jr. and two of his sons are in the 12th degree. I guess the cloning process for humans isn't ready so I'll have to go with the saying "you can't be everywhere".

Trinity Chapter Awards Night

Tonight was the awards presentation for our 50 year members but unfortunately only one could attend. PHP Kenny Lipps was present and able to receive his 50 year award. For many years he was very active in Trinity Chapter until another ongoing conflict with the meeting nights cause him to be less active. It was also nice that a few members of the Shrine were present (and especially the band) which is the conflict with band practices which have kept him from regular attendance. His son, Scott Lipps, who is also a PHP of our Chapter is currently the Potentate of Antioch Shrine and former mayor of Franklin presented him his pin.

Springfield Council #17 Inspection

Well at the last minute work changed my plans to first attend a PDDGM meeting and then go to Springfield but I was able to at least make the Council Inspection in Springfield. There were several dignitaries present in addition to the Arch Inspector Mike Smith which included Marty Trent Grand Senior Warden Grand Commandery, Grand Recorder Grand Council Bobby Campbell, Grand Chaplain Grand Council Bill Jones, Grand Principal Conductor of the Work Grand Council Ed Herrick, and Grand Illustrious Master Lynn Alexander. They did a nice job on the work for the evening and the only unfortunate part was their candidate got stuck in traffic and could not make the Inspection.

KYCH Annual Meeting

KYCH Annual Meeting was held in Gallipolis which meant getting up before the sunrise and taking off to get there. (Okay so the sun really never even came out all day but it was really early) They have a very nice facility and despite it being one of the farther locations away from the majority of the KYCH population, the turnout was very good. They have a number of new KYCH's created and the new officers were elected with Robert McNutt being elected Prior. Randy Williams moved up to fill the vacant chair cause by the death of Mark Richards. Claude Siebel from our temple was one of the candidates.

Cuyahoga Falls Chapter Inspection

Tonight was the Chapter Inspection for Cuyahoga Falls in the 17th District and the first Inspection for their new District Deputy Grand High Priest. RIchard Amlung Deputy Grand Master for Grand Council and Past Grand High Priest Jim Himmelright were both present as were several who have received the Earl Gifford Distinguish Achievement Award. As this was the first Inspection were the 18th District was merged into the 17th District, it was nice to see some visitors from the old 18th attending an Inspection in their new District. The Chapter did a nice job on the work and also did one candidate as a courtesy to Kent Chapter as their candidate had to have emergency surgery when he was to get his Mark Master Degree (which was the Inspection degree this evening). This was also the final Chapter I had never been to an activity at in the 17th District. I'm now down to 10 more Chapters and I will have made at least one event in every Chapter in the State (in my lifetime).

Cabiri Meeting and Leadership Training Meeting

This weekend we had to go to Michigan for the viewing and funeral of my wife's sister-in-law. She was our "go to person" when we needed to be out of town for an extended period of time as she would come down to Dayton to help us out. She was always willing to help out anyone and was way to young to go at 64. Well enough of the sad information. Tonight was our Cabiri (Past Potentates) meeting and I only have one to go now as President and then the Christmas Party and Installation. While it was not a difficult job, it did seem to conflict with several other meetings. Afterwards the by-monthly leadership training session was held. We did planning and went over activities for the future along with discussing a few items we could have improved upon with the leaders at Antioch Shrine of all Clubs/Units and the Divan. These meetings are very beneficial as they help expedite continuous improvement at the Shrine.

Miami Valley York Rite College

Tonight was the York Rite College meeting and we brought in six new members at our meeting in Lebanon, Ohio. The York Rite College is dedicated to helping out the York Rite of Freemasonry. Our Grand Governor for Ohio Ken Crouch was in attendance as were many dignitaries including Grand Illustrious Master, Lynn Alexander who is a Past Governor of our College. The ladies were invited for dinner and entertainment while we went upstairs to perform the ritual work. Since it was a long evening and the ladies were waiting on us, the Grand Governor closed for us tonight.

Trinity Chapter Stated Meeting

Tonight was the stated meeting for my chapter and we had a nice atttendance with 18 present. We discussed upcoming degree work and changes approved at Grand Chapter. We also had a nioe education program and discussed what we can do to help out brothers/companions in need. After the meeting, we had practice for the Royal Arch Widows Degree being performed next month along with refreshments after practice. (Unfortunately, I had to leave as soon as the meeting was over to attend to something for work).

Scottish Rite 12 Degree Rehearsal

Tonight was rehearsal for the Scottish Rite 12th Degree. Hopefully everyone will be over there illness before the actual performance as several were under the weather (though they showed up for rehearsal). We did 2 walkthru practices with the second being much better than the first. Paul Morris has helped us add a little something to the degree with the building of a pit more us to use.(You'll have to come to see what I'm talking about!)With a cast which is almost completely brand new from the last time this was performed, we have some challenges but with some great ritualist's in the degree, I'm sure it will come out well on the day of the performance.

Chapter Reaffirmation Sunday

Today at Miamisburg our District Chaplain held the 3rd District Reaffirmation Sunday service. While several Chapters hold their own service, we have held a District service for those to attend who might not hold one in their own Chapter. The Mayor of Miamisburg, Dick Church, who is a member of Trinity Chapter was the guest speaker. After the service we held a collection for Adopt America and collected $120 and then headed to the dining room for refreshments.

Grand Lodge

The past couple of days have been the Grand Lodge session held in Sharonville, Ohio. The turnout seemed fairly good as many had to stand for part of the meeting as it appeared the number of chairs might not have been sufficient. (Sounds like a good problem to have to resolve!) We heard from all the Masonic bodies and the Masonic youth organizations. There was a fairly decent amount of business covered and today a new group of Grand Officers were installed with MWB Steve Cokonougher installed as the new Grand Master. I was also happy to see that Kent Crager from our Lodge was appointed as a DEO for the 2nd Masonic District. There were also a very good representation of vendors including several new ones I had not seen before.
